View on LinkedInKevin has built an innovative, technical career in the energy sector. He combines this experience with his commercial and strategic thinking, which allows Kevin to work across the technology lifecycle - from invention to application. In recent years, Kevin has applied this expertise in developing a deep understanding of energy storage, particularly long duration technologies, and its role in enhancing the future power infrastructure.
Kevin West PhD FRSC
Long‑Duration Energy Storage & Energy Innovation Leader
With over 20 years at the frontier of energy innovation, I help organisations navigate the transition to net zero by turning deep science into scalable solutions. My current focus is energy storage, particularly long-duration energy storage (LDES), a critical enabler for a renewable-powered grid.
I led BP’s global energy storage R&D team, developing its LDES strategy, overseeing technology scouting, evaluation, and pilot deployment of next-generation storage systems, from compressed air to novel battery approaches. My work has helped shape investment priorities and position LDES as a pillar of grid decarbonisation strategies.
Alongside LDES, I have delivered breakthrough technologies across oil and gas, predictive maintenance, electrification, and mobility, from developing Castrol’s first EV battery thermal management fluid to co-developing innovative flow battery chemistries. With over 25 patent families, deep industry–academic links, and leadership roles including being elected as President for Environment, Sustainability & Energy at the Royal Society of Chemistry, I bring clarity, creativity, and credibility to the toughest energy challenges.
Whether advising startups, corporates, or investors, I specialise in helping organisations identify, evaluate, and commercialise LDES technologies to unlock value in the energy transition.

Kevin West
Kevin received his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge in 2007, following an M.Chem (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh. He joined BP the same year and has since built a distinguished career spanning nearly two decades across upstream, downstream and low-carbon energy technologies.
At BP, Kevin held a series of senior roles including Head of Technology Research for Advanced Energy Solutions, Director of the Upstream Centre for Applied Science, and Innovation Manager at Castrol innoVentures.
His work has focused on identifying, developing and scaling emerging and disruptive technologies — from novel battery chemistries and thermal management fluids for electric vehicles, to long-duration energy storage systems and predictive maintenance solutions for wind turbines.
Kevin has led global, multidisciplinary teams and managed R&D portfolios exceeding $10 million annually. He has played a central role in organisational transformation, innovation strategy, and capability development, including BP’s 2020 Reinvent reorganisation and the formation of new applied science teams.
He is named inventor on over 25 patent families and has co-authored 16 peer-reviewed publications.
In recognition of his contributions to sustainable science and technology, Kevin was elected President of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Environment, Sustainability and Energy community (2026–2029). Today, through K. West Advisory, Kevin offers independent consultancy services to startups, corporates, research institutions, VCs and other investors, helping them evaluate technologies, shape innovation strategies, and accelerate the transition to net zero.

He successfully led a large team in the creation, development and testing of new technology for deployment into our upstream operations. Kevin is a talented and versatile scientist with a track record of generating value and commercialising the products he’s created. He is a supportive leader who gets the best out of those working for him. He was an active, constructive and popular member of my leadership team who led the Upstream Technology strategy refresh. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and wish him well in his future ventures. Rebecca Wiles - Non-Executive Director
View on LinkedInI have had the pleasure of working with Kevin over several years. He is a self starter with a highly innovative approach to solving complex problems and translating concepts into practical outcomes. As an excellent strategic thinker Kevin has much to offer in terms of insights at any point along the journey from concept to commercialisation with the practical experience to back it up.
View on LinkedInWorking with Kevin is always a pleasure, and you get high quality deliverables for the most complex topics like LDES or complex energy systems. Highly recommended!
View on LinkedInIf your organisation needs a leader who can translate complex energy‑technology challenges into pragmatic, commercially viable solutions, I can recommend Kevin without reservation. He will raise the bar for any team or organisation lucky enough to have him.
Kevin is that rare blend of scientist, strategist, and commercial leader who consistently turns bold technical ideas into bottom‑line value. During the years we’ve worked together at bp, I’ve watched him frame our long‑duration energy‑storage ambition, build the cross‑disciplinary teams to deliver it, and shepherd technologies ranging from lab concepts to full‑scale pilots.
Kevin sets a clear vision, then empowers colleagues to challenge assumptions and innovate safely. His leadership of corporate‑wide energy‑storage strategy not only de‑risks but also has the potential to unlock revenue streams in power markets globally. He has an intuitive grasp of market dynamics, yet never loses sight of rigorous science; this balance makes him a compelling champion for emerging technologies.
Kevin’s influence extends well beyond bp. Whether as a representative on the Long Duration Energy Storage Council or serving the Royal Society of Chemistry, he brings the same generosity, curiosity, and data‑driven mindset that inspire those of us who work with him daily.
Colleagues seek him out for guidance because he listens first, challenges constructively, and always steers the conversation toward actionable outcomes.
